An 8-year-old Cub Scout was struck by a moving float Friday night at the Festival of Lights Parade in downtown Crystal Lake.

UPDATE: 10:10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29

Crystal Lake Police have confirmed that an 8-year-old boy was hit by a moving float during the Festival of Lights Parade on Friday night in downtown Crystal Lake.

Crystal Lake Fire Rescue crews were dispatched at 7:52 p.m. to north Williams Street, between Woodstock and Brink streets, to the report of a young child who was struck by a moving float, Police Cmdr. Dan Dziewior said in a news release.

Rescue personnel tended to the child and transported him from the scene to Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, Dziewior said.

Crystal Lake Police conducted a traffic crash investigation regarding the incident.

"It was determined the boy had been a participant in the parade, and had been riding on the float (a flatbed trailer being towed by a truck) for a local Boy Scouts of America group," Dziewior said in the release.

"The child attempted to get off the float to follow an adult distributing candy to parade watchers, and in the process he became entangled with a revolving wheel/tire of the float."

The child fell to the street, and the wheel rolled over the lower portion of his body, resulting in the injury. The driver of the float, upon realizing something had occurred, stopped immediately, and backed the float off of the child, the release states.

No citations have been issued regarding this matter, and are not anticipated, Dziewior said.
