Crystal Lake Police Tap Hyrkas as Deputy Police Chief

Derek Hyrkas, an 18-year veteran with the Crystal Lake Police Force, has been promoted to deputy police chief.

The Crystal Lake Police Department has appointed Derek Hyrkas as the new deputy police chief.

After an internal "competitive promotional process," Crystal Lake Police Chief James Black on Wednesday announced the promotion of Commander Hyrkas to
the position of deputy police chief.

Hyrkas is an 18-year veteran of the Crystal Lake Police Department and has experience in all facets of the organization, Black said in a news release.

"He has been a criminal investigator, staff sergeant, and most recently operations commander where he was in charge of the Targeted Response Unit and the Internal Affairs function of the police department," Black said.

"Deputy Chief Hyrkas brings experience in project management and budget preparation to the position."

Hyrkas has a bachelor’s degree from Columbia College of Missouri and is a graduate of Northwestern University, Center for Public Safety, School of Police Staff and Command.

Prior to his employment with the city of Crystal Lake, Hyrkas served with the U.S. Marine Corps where he earned the Presidential Service Badge, the Navy Achievement Medal, and provided presidential security at Camp David, Maryland.

"I am confident, given Derek’s abilities and his dedication to the organization, that he will be successful in this new position," Black said.

Hyrkas will start his new role on June 24.
