Crystal Lake Man Sentenced After Four Die in 2007 Crash

Fakir Muhammad Jaffrie was sentenced to seven years.

A man has been sentenced to prison for a 2007 reckless driving crash near Hampshire that killed the four passengers in his car.

Fakir Muhammad Jaffrie, 29, of the 500 block of Silver Aspen Circle, Crystal Lake, was sentenced to seven years in the Illinois Department of Corrections by Circuit Judge David R. Akemann.

On Oct. 28, 2010, Jaffrie pleaded guilty to four counts of reckless homicide, each a Class 3 felony.

According to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, at about 3:30 a.m. Sept. 8, 2007, Jaffrie was the driver of a 2003 Infiniti G35 that was westbound on Dietrich Road north of Hampshire. The vehicle was traveling well in excess of the posted 40 mph speed limit when it became airborne, left the roadway and struck a tree.

Two men, Zohair Husain, 18, of Huntley, and Ayush Joshi, 20, of Hoffman Estates, were pronounced dead at the scene. A third man, Kumail Husain, 20, of Algonquin, died that day at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. A fourth man, Henry Onwualu, 19, of Huntley, died Sept. 14, 2007, at St. Anthony’s Medical Center in Rockford. The four men were passengers in the Infiniti G35. Jaffrie was treated for injuries at St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin.

Jaffrie made a statement to police at the scene that the vehicle he was driving was traveling at about 60 mph when it became airborne.

A Kane County crash reconstruction expert, Craig Campbell, determined that the vehicle was traveling at a minimum of 67 mph when it reached the at the crest of a hill and became airborne. The vehicle traveled approximately 78 feet in the air before it crashed, according to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office,

In issuing the sentence, Judge Akemann said, “What is not in dispute is that the defendant’s reckless conduct caused the death of four people.”

According to Illinois law, Jaffrie is eligible for day-for-day sentencing. Jaffrie was given credit for time served in the Kane County jail, as well as credit for time served on electronic home monitoring since the Oct. 20, 2010, plea.

The case was prosecuted by Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Steve Sims.
