Crystal Lake Bicyclist Killed While Crossing Route 14

Gordon McClain, 67, was attempting to cross Route 14 near Route 31 on Monday afternoon when he collided with a car, police said.

A Crystal Lake man was killed late Monday afternoon while bicycling near the intersection of Routes 14 and 31, police said.

Gordan McClain, 67, suffered severe head trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Crystal Lake Police Cmmdr. Derek Hyrkas.

Shortly before 5:45 p.m. Nov. 19, McClain was bicycling southbound on Route 14 and attempted to cross from the north to the south side of the busy four-lane highway. McClain rode into the driver's side of a 2012 Nissan Murano, police said.

The Nissan, driven by an Aurora man, was traveling east on Route 14.

Emergency crews from Crystal Lake Fire Rescue and the police department arrived at the scene at 5:45 p.m., and paramedics evaluated everyone at the scene. It was determined that McClain, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered severe head trauma and was pronounced dead at the accident site, Hyrkas said.

The driver of the car, Digna Campanano, 49, was not injured.

No traffic citations have been issued, and the collision remains under investigation by the Crystal Lake Police Department’s Targeted Response Unit and McHenry County Coroner’s Office, Hyrkas said.

Traffic at the Route 14 and 31 intersection was diverted at the scene by Crystal Lake Police for approximately three hours until the investigation was completed, Hyrkas said.
