Cary Woman and Cary Teen Arrested for Growing Illegal Drugs in Basement

Rachel A. Maloney, 44, of East James Way in Cary, was arrested Thursday after police received a tip illegal drugs were being grown in her basement.

A 44-year-old Cary woman and 15-year-old Cary boy were arrested Thursday on drug charges after police received a Crimestoppers tip indicating illegal drugs were being grown in the woman's basement.

Rachel A. Maloney, 44, of East James Way, was arrested Thursday after police obtained a search warrant and found illegal drugs and paraphernalia in her house, according to a police news release. 

Cary Police Sgt. Michael Roth said the duo are charged with growing psilocbyin in her basement.  Psilocbyin mushrooms are also known as psychedelic mushrooms

Maloney was charged with the following:

  • Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance,
  • Unlawful Delivery of a Controlled Substance
  • Unlawful Delivery of a Controlled Substance within 1000 feet of a school
  • Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (2 counts)
  • Unlawful Possession of Cannabis. 

The 15-year-old Cary boy was arrested and charged with:

  • Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance
  • Unlawful Delivery of a Controlled Substance
  • Unlawful Delivery of a Controlled Substance within 1000 feet of a school
  • Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Maloney is being held in the McHenry County Jail on an $80,000 bond. The teen is being held at the Kane County Juvenile Detention Center.

The Cary Police Department encourages citizens to use Crimestoppers as a means to anonymously report illegal activity to improve the quality of life in the community.
