Cary Prepares for 'Click it or Ticket it' Program

The Cary Police Department will be providing education and enforcement on the seat belt law beginning this week.

The Cary Police Department will be participating in the Click it or Ticket campaign through educational and enforcement programs.

"120 people a day is exactly how many people die in traffic crashes in the U.S." Cary Police Chief Steve Casstevens said. "That is why that nationwide Click it or Ticket it program started several years ago."

The program is partnership between the National Highway Safety Administration, state highway offices and law enforcement agencies across the United States.

It is a combination of education and enforcement to convince motorist to wear their seat belt.

The police department will be handing out materials informing the residents about the Click it or Ticket it program and placing additional information on the police section of the .

"It is because of programs like this, that Illinois has increased it's seat belt use from under 16 percent back in the early 80's, when we passed the seat belt law, to well over 90 percent," Casstevens said. 

Last year, Illinois had less than 1,000 motor vehicle fatalities which is the second time the state had that low of number of fatalities since 1921.

The police department will begin their enforcement program in a couple of weeks.
