No one was injured in a Cary house fire on Sunday afternoon, but the blaze "gutted" the second story and rendered it uninhabitable.

Cary Fire officials immediately initiated a Mutual Aid Box Alarm System, which automatically requests assistance from other fire departments in the area, Douglass said.

Various fire trucks from Algonquin, Fox River Grove, Crystal Lake, Nunda Rural, Wauconda, Lakewood, and McHenry fire departments helped fight the fire. Departments from Huntley and Wonder Lake provided backup assistance at the Cary Fire Station, which received two additional calls during the afternoon that weren't fire-related.

Responders extinguished the blaze by about 3 p.m., Douglass said.

The cause of the fire at the two-story house is still under investigation. An estimate of the loss was not available as of Tuesday. However, the homeowners can't live in the house due to the extensive damage.

"The fire was on the second floor, and it's my understanding that the whole second story was damaged," Douglas said.

An adult son was home at the time. He was evaluated at the scene, but did not need treatment, Douglass said.

Douglass said the Cary Fire Department averages about six house fires per year.

Prior, the most recent house fire in Cary occured on Thanksgiving Day in 2011.

"I don't know why, but for some reason these fires always seem to happen in droves," Douglass said. "This is our second (house) fire in two months."
