Cary Fire Citizen Academy Aims To Raise Safety Awareness

The Cary Fire Protection District has an opportunity for residents to learn about the services provided by the fire department.

The Cary Fire Protection District is hosting their fifth Citizen Fire Academy for student to learn and perform many of the same skills firefighters use every day.

“Trying to get our residents knowledgeable about the fire department and fire safety, Lieutenant Michael Douglass said.

He added, students will be learning how to use fire extinguishers, get medical service training, CPR training and knowledge of first aid do’s and don’ts.

After about a week of learning and training in the class, students will be able to go on ride with the shift manager to see some of the work firefighters do.

The district hasn’t held an academy since 2009 and as of right now, there are four people register for the class, but there are six more openings.

Douglass said the smaller class size allows for students to receive extra attention and experience a hands-on approach as well.

There are five firefighters that was born out of the Citizen Fire Academy but Douglass said this class is a intro into learning fire and medical safety, and there’s a lot of work to become a firefighter.

Participants must be at least 19-years old and the district prefers residents within the Cary fire district. There is no cost involved and dress comfortably.

The academy meets every Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., beginning June 29 through August 17.
