Boy Injured While Sledding at Lions Park in Cary

A young sledder struck a tree at Lions Park on Friday, Jan. 3, and was knocked unconscious. He was flown by Flight for Life helicopter for treatment.

A child was injured Friday while sledding at Lions Park in Cary.

Cary Fire Protection District was dispatched to the park, located at 1200 Silver Lake Road, at about 3:15 p.m. Jan. 3, to the report of a sledder who hit a tree and was knocked unconscious, according to Cary Fire Department spokesman Michael Douglass.

The victim was a boy, the Northwest Herald reported.

Because the child was reported as unconscious, the Cary Fire Protection District placed the Flight For Life helicopter on standby before arriving on the scene.

It takes the helicopter crew about 10 minutes to respond to a call and placing them on standby early allows them to begin their preparations to respond, Douglass said.

When emergency responders arrived on the scene, the child was conscious and appeared in good condition. But, due to the nature of his injury, he was transported by Flight for Life to Advocate Condell Hospital in Libertyville to a Level I Trauma Center.

The Flight for Life helicopter landed at Lions Park to transport the boy.

"He was flown as a precautionary measure," Douglass said. The boy's name was not released.
