State Representatives Mike Tryon and Tim Schmitz Partner for Legislative Breakfast Event

State Representatives Mike Tryon (R-Crystal Lake) and Tim Schmitz (R-Batavia) held a joint legislative breakfast on August 29 with local mayors, village presidents, village managers and village administrators from Illinois House Districts 65 (Schmitz) and 66 (Tryon).

Local leaders from Algonquin, Batavia, Burlington, Elgin, Gilberts, Huntley, Sleepy Hollow, St. Charles and West Dundee attended the breakfast event, which was held at the Burnt Toast restaurant in Elgin. “Representative Schmitz and I pull our municipal leaders together a few times each year to learn about their local issues and about how we can better represent them in Springfield,” said Tryon. “We also use this time to update our local leaders about issues of importance in Springfield, and together we brainstorm for ideas of how to help our shared constituencies.”

Schmitz added that keeping the channels of communication open between the local and state levels is critical. “It’s always nice to meet with our local leaders and to hear their concerns and priorities,” said Schmitz. “These are the individuals with the most direct contact with residents from across our House legislative districts, so their input and feedback is very valuable. It really helps us work on their behalf when we are proposing legislation and voting on bills.”

According to the legislators, topics of discussion included taxes, pension reform, the proposed pension cost shift, transportation, budgets and jobs/unemployment. “The discussion was lively and very productive,” said Tryon. “I know Tim and I walked away with a better understanding of the pressures our municipalities are facing with regard to diminishing local resources and ongoing budget pressures.”

The group was also joined by U.S. Congressman Peter Roskam of IL District 6 and U.S. Congressman Randy Hultgren of IL District 14. The two federal legislators discussed the Affordable Care Act implementation and other federal issues that are affecting Illinoisans. “I appreciate Congressmen Roskam and Hultgren taking time out of their busy schedules to address our local leaders from southern McHenry and northern and central Kane Counties,” Tryon said. “Their contributions to the discussion really rounded out the event.”
