Express Yourself in New Ways with Language Classes at MCC

Learn a new language for job enhancement or just for fun with classes offered by McHenry County College’s Continuing Education Department.

The following classes are available:

German I: Learn the rich history and diverse culture of Germany in this basic German language class. Ideal for those interested in traveling to German-speaking countries. Participants will learn basic German grammar, practice word pronunciation and phrase study. The required book is “The Everything Learning German Book” second edition, with CD included, ISBN: 9781598699890. Textbooks must be purchased prior to start of class and is not available in the MCC Bookstore. Class takes place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 11 through April 15 in Room E104. Cost is $120.  Use course ID: NFL S21 002 to register.          

Italian I: Learn about Italian culture and learn the basics of expressing yourself in the “Bella Lingua!” Participants will learn basic but useful skills to make themselves understood in Italy. Ideal for prospective tourists or for those who want to get back in touch with their Italian roots in a fun and engaging way.  The required textbook is Espresso 1 Student Book by L. Ziglio and G. Rizzo, Alma Edizioni (available at www.deltapublishing.com for $35.90) the ISBN: 9788861820531. Textbooks must be purchased prior to the start of class. Class takes place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12 through April 16 in Room A241. Cost is $119.  Use course ID: NFL S12 004 to register.

Sign Language I: An introduction to finger spelling and basic survival signs that can be used in a variety of settings. The book for class will be discussed at the first class session. This class is taught by an instructor who is deaf. Class will take place from 7 to 9 p.m.  Wednesday, Feb. 19 through May 14 in Room A213. Cost is $125.  Use course ID: NFL S01 005 to register. 

Spanish I: Focuses on the beginning aspects of Spanish, including basic writing, speaking, pronunciation, listening, understanding, and the culture of Spanish-speaking countries. You will use grammar, vocabulary and verbs in the most basic structure of the language. The required book is “Spanish Is Fun Book 1: Lively Lessons for Beginners” by Amsco School Publications, third edition, ISBN: 9781567654646. Textbooks must be purchased prior to start of class. Book is not available in the MCC Bookstore. Three different class sections are offered: Tuesday evenings, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. from February 4 through March 18 in Room E117 (course ID: NFL S05 014); Wednesday mornings 9 to 11 a.m. from January 29 through March 19 in Room A113 (course ID: NFL S05 011); and Friday mornings 9-11 a.m. in Room A113 from January 31 through March 21, to register for this class use course ID NFL S05 015.  Cost is $109 per person.
