It is that holiday time for most of us and with all the stress and financial issues so many people have it's easy to forget all the things in our lives that are good. In our world so many people are afflicted with loss and devastation it's a reminder to us how fortunate we really are.
This past year the world of sports had some serious issues that were publicized and affected many families. Each day we are here it's like an hour glass filled with a grain of sand which represents our actions and our choices. Every person even unknown to themselves affects the outcome of thousands of people because of our own free will.
Athletes in general should have a high level of thanks for all the people who help them and should truly consider being thankful and grateful because athletes have opportunities other people do not get. So many times we hear of professional athletes making poor decisions and without thinking first they cause undo harm to many people.
Just last week we heard the Dallas Cowboys lost a player due to a DUI with another player driving. If these players were so truly grateful for what they have or had, would they still act that way? We have all made mistakes but it is what we do today and now with our lives that matter. I today have so many things to be grateful for and that gets put on a list and read with my family at Christmas.
If you are reading this, take a second to jot down some of the things you are grateful for and think about how quickly those things can be taken or lost. Treat those around you with care and dignity and set an example for others to follow.
Just a few pointers for just the athletes. Remember that most are one injury away from never playing again so never take for grated each and every practice, game and training session. Be kind to your teammates and coaches, respect your parents and keep from boasting about how you play. Do not get caught up in the society of bashing others and take aside a struggling player and help them. Do not turn your back on hazing issues and stick up for the little guy.
I today am grateful for the opportunity to help others and give of my time. I am grateful for my family and those close around me. I am grateful for God who keeps me here!
