A Secret Surprise for My Guests ...

What to do when your porch needs a rebuild -- not a safety issue, more an ugly issue -- but you don't have the funds to fund it? I chose to hide the ugly by painting a porch rug on my landing ...

What do you do when your front porch is falling apart?  Okay, not a safety issue falling apart.  More an ugly falling apart.

Now I’d love to tell you this was a simple project.  But in my world simple projects don’t involve math …

… and my front porch required some serious math.  Serious math that had me pulling my hair out after two very long and frustrating hours trying to measure out diamonds.  I ended up with a giant ball of painter’s tape and a change of plans in the tune of a checkerboard pattern.

And I’d like to say I planned on the outer black border and black diamond details from the beginning …

… but truth be told, they were added to hide a multitude of paint bleeding sins …

The jury is still out about whether I should add a coat of polyurethane.

In the end, we now have a one-of-a-kind, custom rug on our porch. You can’t see it from the sidewalk, but it makes me happy every time I walk up the steps.

It’s like a secret surprise waiting for my guests …
