Celebrate 'Look at Local History Month' at Colonel Palmer House

Colonel Palmer House staff celebrate Look at Local History Month with Open House on Saturday, May 4.

How many times have you traveled down Route 176 in Crystal Lake and wondered what the significance of the wonderfully restored brick homestead known as Colonel Palmer House has to our local history?

The historic Colonel Palmer House is a hidden gem of Crystal Lake that serves as a reminder of our local history and heritage.

The month of May is National History Month, the perfect time to increase your awareness of how this home, built by Gustavus and Henrietta Palmer in 1958, still impacts residents today.

An exhibit on schools within Crystal Lake will be featured with a focus on Crystal Lake Central High School. Colonel Palmer House Facility coordinator, Mary Ott, will be on hand to answer questions and give house tours.

Tours will begin each hour from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. with the last tour of the day beginning at 3 p.m.

The Colonel Palmer House is noted for being an excellent example of a successful partnership between a private not-for-profit organization, the Crystal Lake Historical Society, and a large public entity, the Crystal Lake Park District.

This cooperation resulted in a wonderfully restored historic home which serves as a local history museum, an archive library and a facility for heritage events.

Colonel Palmer House is located at 660 Route 176 in Crystal Lake.

The home is open to the public Tuesdays from 3 to 7 p.m.; and Thursdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and for scout programs by appointment.

A full schedule of history-based Girl Scout and Cub Scout programs are also offered by the Colonel Palmer House staff.
