Summer Reading 2011 at the Cary Area Library

Summer reading programs are underway at the Cary Area Library.

Now that school’s out, Summer Reading at the Cary Library is in full swing for Cary Library cardholders of all ages (it’s NOT just for “kids” anymore)!

Adults (18+ up), even if you don’t need an “incentive” to read, why not join the Adult Reading program (“Book it to the Beach”) and read for the chance to win prizes?

Even if you don’t want to “complete” the program, you can still earn a McCafe’ from McDonald’s and a summer “read” of your choice by completing 3 of 6 “squares” on your reading log.

Each square features something to accomplish, like reading a book of your choice in any format (print, audiobook, e-reader) or checking out a CD, DVD, or magazine, or even attending a library program.

If you complete all 6 “squares”, you’ll receive (while supplies last) a 26 oz. aluminum sports bottle and be eligible to win a grand prize (your choice of a bag of “themed” items for summer fun, or even a Sony eReader).

Kids (infant to “entering” grade 6) and teens (entering grades 7-12) share the theme, “A Midsummer Knight’s Read”. Kids (non-readers, infant-K) in the “Read-to-Me” Club need to have 60 library books read to them in order to complete the program.

Kids who are Independent Readers (Gr. 1-6) need to read 900 minutes (yes, one audiobook counts, as does one magazine and a book from home) in order to complete, earn prizes, and be eligible to enter the Grand Prize drawing (prizes include books & more).

Participants entering Grades 4, 5 or 6 who successfully complete their program may win a Sony eReader if their name is selected in the grand prize drawing.

Teens can earn prizes(first 100 completers get an aluminum water bottle) and a chance at a Sony eReader (or other prizes) by reading a four library books and checking out other library materials.

It’s a proven fact that kids who read throughout the summer months are more likely to retain (or surpass) the reading skills they achieved the previous school year.

Kids love to choose their own reading material, and prizes are an added incentive to keep them reading throughout summer break.

Remember, you can still register for the summer reading program through July 16; all of the reading programs (kids, teens, adults) end at closing on Saturday, July 30 (no exceptions).

Why not make your first stop during this vacation (or “staycation”) season your local public library? There’s something for everyone inside! Don’t miss out on the fun!
