Cary to Host National Night Out at Jaycee Park

Cary is hosting its' second annual National Night Out program from 5 to 9 p.m. August 2, 2011.

Cary residents will have the opportunity to increase their awareness about crime and drug prevention at the National Night Out program, which is the second year it's being held in Cary.

"This is the second year, we have made some improvements and are looking forward to have a larger crowd," Bill Pickett co-chairman of the Cary National Night Out committee said.

Pickett said the program has led to Cary residents being more aware about crime in the village.

"Those that stopped by were able to see that our officers want as much as we do to make Cary a better place," he said. "The residents were able to ask questions, see the equipment and enjoy themselves in a friendly environment."

Pickett added,"All of us were able to develop a better understanding of what we can do together."

The National Association of Town Watch, which is the national sponsor of the program, has seen the program involvement grow to 34 million people from more than 10,000 communities, according their website.

The program began in 1984 and this year marks the 28th annual National Night Out program.

"Most crimes are crimes of opportunity, meaning if the opportunity presents itself, criminals will commit crimes," Pickett said. "Therefore, the best way for a citizen to not be a crime victim is to not present the opportunity."
