Dominick's Employee Suspended on Last Day for YouTube Parody Video

Steve Yamamoto's YouTube parody, "Thanks Safeway," apparently didn't sit well with Dominick's bosses.

Nearly all of the 72 Chicago area Dominick's stores closed Saturday, Dec. 28. But that didn't prevent Glen Ellyn Dominick's store employee Steve Yamamoto from getting suspended from his job on Saturday.

What on earth could get him suspended from Dominick's on the last day of the store's existence? The YouTube video embedded in this article, that's what.

NBC Chicago is reporting that the parody on the store closings, titled "Thanks Safeway," was posted on Friday. The sarcastic sci-fi action scenes feature explosions, laser beam annihilations, fire breathing dragons and other apocalyptic-style special effects.

When Yamamoto arrived for his last day of work Saturday, he was suspended. He said he was "dumbfounded" that his attempt to make light of a bad situation would result in his suspension. But, he told NBC, "It was all worth it."

I absolutely LOVED this video!! This young man is very talented! Hopefully it will get him the positive attention he deserves! And shame on Safeway...suspending an employee for expressing what he thinks and feels. You (Safeway) gave him the material to make it. Guess it is hard to swallow watching yourself in such a negative light.

That was great. Good luck to him in whatever venture he has in his future!

Bad, vindictive way for Safeway to exit the Chicago market. I hope the Safeway PR people tell the HR people to give Steve his severance and drop the entire matter.

The video was great! And TRUE. I wish SAFEWAY would get a clue and stop flooding the radio market with Dominick's ads. Out here in the Northwest Burb's you screwed us out of my favorite store. I'm tired of hearing your radio ads.

Great video and trust me, you have BETTER things to do with your time than work at a Dominicks! You should be in Video editing..or something to do with video. GREAT JOB!

Businesses are all bout protecting themselves and their images, and its understandable. Hopefully this doesn't damage his reputation to where an employer wont hire him because of fear that he will do the same thing to them. Good luck kid.

Really good work Yamamoto! And you were working at Dominicks. If nothing else you have the talent to do short videos for weddings, parties, graduations, etc. Go get em you got talent Mr. use it. umm lack of humor Dominicks maybe that's why you had to shuffle off to Buffalo?
