Cary Village Board Votes No on DVD Vending Machines

Cary businesses wanting a DVD vending machine will have to obtain a special permit.

The Cary Village Board denied a text amendment that would have allowed grocery stores, drug stores or gasoline stations to have DVD vending machines located outside of their enclosed building.

"I stand as I did before, I’m against it because of looks, cleanliness and the possibility of them being potentially being broken into," Cary Trustee Ray Chisholm said. "Most of the businesses that potentially have them are not open 24-7."

Trustee Chisholm added, "If they want them, I think they should have to get a permit."

Village staff member, Jacob Rife, said the village zoning board had concerns about young residents having access to the DVD vending machines and also the potential to hinder the front entrance of the building.

"It's a matter of policy, and in my opinion, it would be counter-productive to have every vending machine come before this body for a conditional-use permit," Mayor Tom Kierna said.
