Academy Raises $9,000 for Community Advocate

On Saturday, March 17  in Cary, hosted a fund-raiser to support Kris Ottenfeld, who began martial arts more than 18 years ago.

Ottenfeld suffered a major stroke last month, which resulted in diminished mental capacity and an inability to continue her career as a challenged student bus aide.

As part of its community outreach program, Lee’s Martial Arts Academy student, Beth Rogala and Grand Master Chul W. Lee decided to hold a Charity event to help alleviate her medical costs.

Kris’ son Misha Ottenfeld, as well as many of surrounding Cary-Grove residents attended the event. 

The outpouring of generosity to the family exceeded $9000.

Beth Rogala, a long-time friend of the Ottenfeld family, was moved to tears “by the kindness of everyone in the community that was touched by Kris through her 18 years of service. Kris was an inspiration and a leader to many people over the past decade and it is wonderful to see everyone honor her this way.” 

Grand Master Chul W. Lee, a world ninth degree black belt and owner of Lee’s Martial Arts Academy, has been an advocate of the community outreach program in Cary for the past 18 years. 

“Kris was one of my initial students who was always one to help other students learn and was always volunteering her time to aid the community, like the Cary Grove food pantry,” said Lee. “She is a loving, kind and giving person who made time to help anyone.”  

“She spent so much time helping that I would receive some phone calls from her husband that she needs to be home with her family,” Lee said.  

Lee’s Martial Arts Academy have done several of these fundraisers over the years to support organizations like N.I.S.R.A, Leukemia Research Foundations, Cary Grove Park District, and the local elementary schools, in which the Cary Grove community has strongly and generously supported our efforts.  

The academy will continue to grow our community outreach program and welcome any suggestions and ideas for us to better serve the people of Cary.
