Walking Dead Comes to Crystal Lake: Zombie 5K Run, 1 Mile Walk

Run among the zombies - or dress as one for the race- in this fun October event that benefits the Home of the Sparrow.

A warning to citizens: Come Oct. 5th, Crystal Lake will be under the invasion of zombies - running zombies, no less.

The Home of the Sparrow is hosting the Zombie 5K Run, 1 Mile Walk from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, at Three Oaks Recreation Area, 5517 Route 14, Crystal Lake.

The Home of the Sparrow plans to confine the Living Dead to the restricted Zombie Zone Area, but needs your help in making sure the zombies don’t escape!

The public is invited to gather a team of protectors and join the run through a 5K course. Be prepared to enter a mile long Zombie Zone full of the Living Dead.

Zombies cannot physically touch, or chase any human. Those people who would rather not run can take their chances by participating in the 1-Mile Walk through the Zombie Zone. A family friendly, mile long Safe Zone Walk has been created for those who rather stay clear of zombies.

In order to protect themselves, runners are encouraged to dress as a zombie or in a Halloween costume. This will confuse the Living Dead, keeping participants safe.

A celebratory Monster Mash Party will follow, consisting of face painting, pumpkin painting and awards for best zombies. Medals will also be awarded for the top three runners in each age category.

Raise Additional Money for Home of the Sparrow

Once registered for the run or walk, runners and walkers will have the opportunity to customize their own fundraising page, according to race organizers.

If each participant raises $150, organizers will reach the goal of $20,000. The first 100 participants to reach this goal will receive a free Zombie Run/Walk T-shirt.
