September Fundraiser to Benefit Cary Musician

Algonquin residents are planning a fundraiser for cancer patient and musician Don Cole.

As people who want to be anything but ordinary, when we are inspired to do something more with our lives, we should realize one thing: Life is too short to not chase our dreams.

A tool-and-die maker by trade, Cary resident Don Cole really has one true love, and that is music.

Cole has played in most of the venues in the area and was a regular at the Cary Indoor Gold until they closed.

An inspiration to musicians everywhere, Cole was recently diagnosed with lung cancer.

However, the music he plays touches you somewhere deep inside, making you want to go home and dust off your old guitar or take up the harmonica—Cole makes music seem so effortless.

“While the music he plays and enjoys was popular decades ago, he still finds a way to connect with young musicians who enjoy more contemporary music," Algonquin native Pru Koehler said of Cole and his musical abilities.

"My 15-year-old nephew is a huge fan, on a personal level, Don is one of those people that you feel lucky to count as a friend."

Koehler’s family and friends in Algonquin have decided to put together a fundraiser to help with Cole’s day-to-day expenses, as he is not working after beginning to undergo chemotherapy.

The benefit will is from 4 to 9 p.m. Sept. 24, at the Haegers Bend Clubhouse, 3226 E. Bend Rd., Algonquin.

A $15 donation will get participants food, drinks and musical performances by young musicians Cole has inspired.

The donation will also get you one entry into a drawing for a 32-inch Sony Bravia LCD flat screen TV.

Other raffle items include gift certificates for Shannon’s Pet Sitting, Dirty Dog Mobile Pet Grooming, Best Buy and Wildfire Restaurant.
