As of Friday afternoon, volunteers and public works department workers from Nunda Township had made somewhere between 25,000 to 30,000 sandbags to help residents dealing with flooding.

Volunteers continued to fill the bags, and Mike Lesperance, Nunda Township Highway Commissioner-elect, said workers would keep filling the bags until the demand for them stops.

"We had 80 or 90 volunteers filling bags last night, and today we've had about 40 people working filling bags," Lesperance said."We still need help."

Most of the bags are going to Nunda Township residents living along the Fox River.

Residents living in the Burton's Bridge area have been hard hit, and Nunda Township closed Rawson Bridge Road, near Broken Oar, to through traffic at 11 p.m. Thursday, Lesperance said.

Other hard-hit neighborhoods include Riverdale subdivision, near Route 176 and Island Lake; Bayview Beach;  Orchard Heights in McHenry; and Riverside Park in McHenry.

Some of the volunteers included a group of mission students who helped at township headquarters filling sandbags and also side-by-side at houses along the river.

"This has been a good experience," said Colton Brown, of Salt Lake City, Utah. "It's especially nice to help out in the community. Most of the people we've been helping are elderly."

Sandbags are being delivered to those in need, and some homeowners are picking them up from the Nunda Township Highway Commissioner's headquarters at 3518 Bay Road, Crystal Lake.

Volunteers can call the highway commissioner's office to see how they can help at 815-459-4410.
