How Wealth Ranges by Neighborhood in Crystal Lake

The online tool Rich Block, Poor Blocks uses Google Maps and U.S. Census data to break down the median household income by neighborhood.

There is a noticeable range in wealth from neighborhood to neighborhood in Crystal Lake. 

But even the neighborhoods with the lowest household incomes are at — or well above — the state's range for middle-class income, according to Rich Blocks, Poor Blocks, an online tool that combines Google Maps with the most recent Census data to show income and rent prices. 

One of Crystal Lake's wealthiest areas includes neighborhoods east of South Main Street —which includes homes near the Three Oaks Recreation Area — stretching west to Route 31 and south of Northwest Highway.

There, the median household income is about $93,000. The same median income can be found directly east of Route 31 and includes neighborhoods west of Cary-Algonquin Road and Route 14 and north of Klasen Road. 

One of Crystal Lake's poorest neighborhoods is located north of James Rakow Road, west of Virginia Road and east of McHenry Avenue. There, the median household income is $59,245.

Families living in neighborhoods surrounding Crystal Lake's downtown area earn a median household income of $63,892. This section stretches from Route 14 east to Route 31 and includes neighborhoods north of Route 14 and south of Crystal Lake Avenue. 

The poorest neighborhoods in McHenry County are in Harvard where there are neighborhoods with household incomes of around $34,000.
