The Crystal Lake Public Library has announced the 28 winners of the 8th Annual Read, Write and Win competition among elementary school students.

Library officials held an awards ceremony on April 22 to announce this year's winners of the contest sponsored by the library, Rotary Club of Crystal Lake Dawnbreakers, McHenry County College and Community School District 47, said library public relations director Linda Price.

"There were 152 Crystal Lake students in grades 3-8 who entered this year’s contest, which promotes reading literacy and creative writing or illustrating by asking students to write or illustrate a new ending for a book selected by the library," Price said in a release.

This was the first year participants had the option of choosing between writing an essay, or illustrating a graphic novel as an ending to the selected book.

Winners for each of the six books were awarded cash prizes of $100, $75, $50 and $25, respectively, which were donated by the Dawnbreakers. First-place winners read their essays at the event, Price said.
