Metra is once again this winter advising its riders to expect delays Thursday as adverse weather conditions are expected to slow its trains.

Metra posted a service alert Wednesday on its website alerting riders that trains may experience delays late Wednesday evening through Thursday due to weather-related conditions.

"Metra will continue to utilize all possible measures available to combat extraordinary weather conditions," according to the Metra service alert.

As of 7 a.m. Thursday, Metra was reporting delays on the Union Pacific Northwest line —but the delay did not appear to be directly related to the weather. Inbound train #602, which was expected to arrive in Chicago at 6:10 a.m., was operating 15 to 20 minutes behind schedule due to mechanical problems, according to the Metra website.

Metra riders are encouraged to plan for extra travel time.

Meanwhile, standing water and icy spots were slowing commute times and causing headaches for drivers throughout the area Thursday morning.

Several incidents were being reported on major highways and interstates as of 7 a.m. Thursday including: downed power lines on Route 83 an Foster Avenue in Bensenville, high-standing water at the inbound on ramp of Interstate 290 at Ashland Avenue/Paulina Street as well as high-standing water on the off ramp of the inbound I-90/I-94 at IL-171/Cumberland Avenue, according to ABC7 Chicago(See updates/road conditions map above for more information).

Patches of snow and ice were reported on Interstate 90 immediately west and south of Rockford — with snow and ice affecting other roadways throughout that immediate area, according to the Illinois Department Transportation Winter Weather Conditions map(See updates/weather conditions map above for more information).
