The founding fathers of this country were certainly not perfect, but they had far more insight into humanity and government than any and all of our politicians have today. They understood that government has always been evil and always will be, but was necessary and always will be. Our constitution was written not to govern us, but to protect us from the government that it created. And the second amendment, is #2 on the list of amendments for very good reason - it ensures that the government can not overstep its bounds on the other amendments. I for one, am comforted knowing that 60 million Americans own guns; many of which are assault rifles. These are the folks that will aid me in making sure our government doesn't become tyrannical or socialist or communist. Of course, I'm sure a small percentage of the 60 million are neo nazis or other types of wack jobs, but the people I have met at the shooting ranges have all been pretty nice, personable, and down to Earth. I am a middle of the road Republican who believes in small government (socially and fiscally). I love shooting my AR's with my high capacity mags. Our military keeps us safe from foreign enemies, our armed civilians keep us safe from an abusive government.

Perusing the FBI crime stats reveals this info:

Think about it: In 2005, the number of murders committed with a rifle was 445, while the number of murders committed with hammers and clubs was 605. In 2006, the number of murders committed with a rifle was 438, while the number of murders committed with hammers and clubs was 618.

And so the list goes, with the actual numbers changing somewhat from year to year, yet the fact that more people are killed with blunt objects each year remains constant.

But don't let the facts get in the way of a good old panic-pushing agenda that has no basis in reality.

The FEDERAL government actually has no Constitutional right when it comes to firearms owned by citizens of the individual States.
