Daniela was a passenger in a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo that was traveling westbound on Route 176 around 9:30 p.m. Sunday when the Jeep was struck by a 2011 Infiniti QX56, according to a release from McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren.

The Infiniti failed to stop at a stop sign, Nygren said. Traffic on Route 176 is not required to stop at the intersection. Upon impact, both vehicles exited the southwest corner of the intersection, hit the guardrail and came to rest.

Daniela was ejected from the vehicle, the press release said. An eye witness at the scene said he and other motorists stopped and helped lift the car off the child, who was pinned against the guardrail.

The driver of the Infiniti, Leonardo R. Martinez, 43, of New Lenox, was transported to Woodstock Centegra Hospital along with his passenger Maria Alvarez, 34. Both were treated for minor injuries. A five-year-old passenger was treated at the scene and released.

The driver of the Jeep, Francisco J. Gomez, 30, of Woodstock, refused medical treatment. The other passengers in the Jeep with Daniela were Janet B. Gomez, 33, and a one-year-old child both of whom were transported to Woodstock Centegra Hospital and treated for minor injuries, according to reports

Sheriff’s deputies continue investigating and have not determined whether seat belts were used.

Members of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, Marengo Police Department, Marengo Rescue, Marengo Fire Protection District, and Flight for Life responded to the crash scene.
