The Week in Cary-Grove Athletics
A look back at the last seven days for the Trojans.
Cary-Grove’s baseball team began their week with a 4-1 win over Fox Valley Conference Valley Division leader Huntley on Monday.
John Spoelstra threw a complete game to get the win while Matt Panek had a three-run double to provide all the offense Cary would need.
On Thursday, Alex Posey hit a three-run homer but it wasn’t enough as the Trojans fell 5-4 at Dundee-Crown. C-G rebounded on Friday with a 9-4 win over Dundee-Crown as six Trojans had two hits or more including a three-hit day from Michael Vilardo.
Saturday was an unique day for Cary, playing two games against two different opponents.
Cary started the day with a 12-0 win at home against Woodstock as Vilardo had four hits and homered. In the second game, C-G defeated Huntley for the second time in six days with a 11-4 win.
Spoelstra got his second win of the week against the Red Raiders and also homered. Vilardo and Danny Leisten each added home runs in the victory to move Cary to 20-8 on the season.
The Trojan softball team began their week Monday with a 10-6 win at Huntley as Lindsay Efflandt won her 19th game of the season and Lisa Semro had three RBIs during a three-hit day.
Cary clinched the FVC Valley title Friday with a 13-0 win over McHenry that included an 11-run opening inning. Semro had three RBIs while Efflandt and Taylor Dunne each knocked in two runs as Cary improved to 22-1 overall and 12-0 in the FVC Valley.
Cary’s girls soccer team ended their regular season on Tuesday with a 3-1 win at Woodstock North. Korey Kronforst scored all three goals for the Trojans, who finished their regular season with a 12-7-1 record and will play Jacobs in the Class 4A Barrington Regional semifinal at 7 p.m. May 18.
The Trojan tennis team participated in the FVC Meet on Saturday, finishing fourth as a team.
Chris Federighi took third at No. 1 singles, winning his third-place match against Crystal Lake South’s Cam Laktash 6-3, 7-5 while the No. 3 doubles team of Carsten Gallant and David Henry also won their third place match.
The Cary boys track team finished second at the Jacobs Quadrangular as Anthony Golowach won the 200 and 400 meters.
On Friday, the Trojans took part in the Fox Valley Conference meet, finishing third as a team. Golowach won the high jump and the 400 meters while Josh Freeman won the shot put and discus events. The girls track team was at the Huntley Sectional on Friday evening as the team qualified in eight different events, advancing to the state meet at Eastern Illinois University.
Sarah Ryan won the 100 and 200 meter runs while Kathie Wollney took the 100 high hurdles and 300 low hurdles. Ryan was also part of the 4x100 and 4x200 relays that qualified. Carly Loeffel won the high jump to advance as well.
