Poll: Will You Shop on Thanksgiving Night?

Major retailers Target, Walmart, Sears, and Kmart are planning to open for holiday shopping at 8 and 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving night.

Some consumers may enjoy gobbling down a Thanksgiving meal and then running out to shop for pre-Black Friday deals that night.

But as retailers start the holiday shopping season earlier and earlier each year, the idea isn't sitting well with employees forced to work the Thanksgiving night shift.

Target employees are so upset about the company's decision to open stores at 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving night, one worker has started an online petition asking the retailer to "give Thanksgiving back to families," and restore it to its rightful holiday status.

As of Tuesday night, the petition had more than 200,000 signatures.

This year, Walmart, Kmart and Sears are opening their doors at 8 pm Thursday, Nov. 22, according to their websites.

Kmart is advertising "The Triple Door Buster," with shopping specials from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thanksgiving Day; a different selection of sales from 8 p.m. Thanksgiving night to 3 a.m. Friday, Nov. 23; and more sales items from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday.

Traditionally, Black Friday shopping began in the early morning hours the day after Thanksgiving. Last year, several big box retailers started at midnight, igniting an outcry from employees.

"Last year's opening at midnight was pushing it. By the time I left around 8 a.m., I was absolutely exhausted," said C. Renee, the Target employee who started this year's petition.

So, the question is:

Will you work off that turkey and pie by racing off Thanksgiving eve in hopes of seizing a pre-Black Friday deal, or shop for the fun of it?

Holidays such as Thanksgiving, as well as July 4th, Memorial Day, Labor Day should honor their reason for beings. Shopping to save a few dollars for Christmas gifts or buy a mattress on Memorial day is just completely disrespectful of the holidays. It is more important for the right of a person to celebrate the holiday with family and friends than for the right of a person to shop.

I have written to Durban and Kirk to request a Federal Law to be enacted that unless a person is emnployed in an essential service, that they cannot be required to work those holidays as a condition of employment. I ask that others send their representatives the same request.

You actually spent time writing your reps about something like this? Please tell me you feel so passionately about other more pressing, more important issues and have written the same people. Honor the reason for being? So the way to "respect" a holiday is to do what exactly? Oh I know, sit around the house and watch the NFL on turkey day while overstuffing ourselves with the spoils of our country or do you mean go to a hometown parade where on the 4th where 95% of the crowd is just interested in getting their kids a bag full of candy and cheering on the guys driving their convertibles and the varsity sports floats. Don't get me wrong I enjoy all the above but it has nothing to do with honoring the day in mention, it's just a day where if you are fortunate to have a job you get it off but if not well then hopefully you are at least paid for the work. Another thought is if those of us who have jobs and actually have to show up the Friday after Thanksgiving then maybe the prospect of having the opportunity to save some good money on otherwise exclusive Black Friday deals is a draw. Just because I have to work on Black Friday, I shouldn't be excluded from saving money because you took the day off because honoring the day happens to spill over to the next.

There is a reason it's called Black Friday, because that's when the shopping should start! I feel so bad for all of the people who have to work Thursday night. When I think Black Friday, I always imagine going out at 5 or 6 am. I guess all of the good stuff is going to be gone by then!! I'm sorry for all the holiday workers. Retail is bad enough as it is.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. It is NOT Turkey Day. I don't like to even talk about black Friday on the Holiday. People that are required to work on the Holiday should be paid Holiday pay 2 1/2 x hourly. If people want to work they should trade with the people who do not want to work. I don't like the idea of putting Christmas stuff out on shelves weeks before Halloween. Christmas music before Thanksgiving is unforgivable. Many must rethink the Holidays and what they mean. Thanksgiving is a family Holiday. Remember to give Thanks.

I feel bad for those people who have to work Thanksgiving night. It was hard enough for those people when they had to be to work by 3 a.m. on Friday. I guess they just won't go to sleep at all that night.

You sound like a fun guy Tim. I am sorry you did not have a proper upbringing so that you understood the real meaning of Thanksgiving. Perhaps you were not born in this country? Could be another reason.

Don't feel pity and sorrow, you are missing the point PW. Holidays have become less and less about what they were intended, some religious ones like X-mas and Thanksgiving (which has it origins in religion) aren't at all about the tradition and honoring unless you are talking about getting lost in the frenzy of buying gifts and watching sports. I have no problem with (disclaimer, I'm not religious per se) that but to say it's disrespectful of the holiday, as Mikein stated, because someone has to or chooses to work since they need the extra income is kind of myopic...don't you think? I'm not trying to be negative or be one of those guys who picks fights on here just pointing out that of all the things holidays have become having an issue with someone actually working during them is kind of silly in itself. I agree with your thought on the pay scale, it does suck to have to work on a day when most people would want to spend it with their family but maybe the sad truth is without those stores being open and offering that option it's lost income for the workers and lost revenue for the business in a time where businesses are struggling to keep their doors open and employ us

not to mention the savings can be significant. Why those same deals aren't available on more than just one day is crazy, maybe we wouldn't read stories and see footage of people getting trampled or shot because they happened to grab the last laptop or must have toy.

I think it's great to save some extra money, however, the choice to open earlier and earlier by retailers is greedy. What's wrong with starting at midnight? The fact of the matter is that black friday starts then. Why is it necessary to force employees in earlier, and open earlier?! No one wants to lose their job, so my guess is they reluctantly come in anyway. It's not right before midnight in my opinion.

I will have Thanksgiving dinner with my mother and my wife in Des Plaines. Then head down to Lombard to visit with my brother and his wife (down from Rochester, Minnesota) visiting with his daughter and fiance. After enjoying their company and a meal I have to head off to work the Thanksgiving sales from 7:30 PM to 5:00 AM Friday morning. Be thankful if you DON'T have to work that day!!

I know there are so many people who already have to work Thanksgiving (anyone in the airline, hotel, travel business....anyone at a grocery store). But it would be nice if the retailers held off until Friday. Save Turkey Day!
