Q: Valentine's Day Dilemma:

To help your child celebrate Valentine's Day in their school classroom, tell us: Are paper Valentines good enough? Some moms have gone several steps and several dollars further, attaching goody bags filled with candy those paper valentines for all 27 kids in the class.

Where do you fall? Is it more fun to go bigger? Or are you "old school" and think paper is plenty?

We usually go the route of a paper valentine with one piece of candy attached. No goody bag. I'm old school, but I also don't think kids need all that stuff. I helped out at my daughter's classroom Halloween party and the amount of shwag she brought home was unreal. She was going trick-or-treating, and much of that candy ended up being donated anyway.

I'm with you, Jennifer...a homemade card with a Hershey's Kiss attached is a nice gesture. The fun is in the making of the card and letting your child "choose" which card to give to each of their classmates. The time and attention spent on the giving portion of the holiday is what's important...not the quantity of loot.

Grow a TickleMe Plant as it is the only house plant that reacts to affection! The TickleMe Plant will close its leaves and lower it branches if you blow it a kiss or Tickle It!

I am so against the "goody bag" concept ... I can't even go there ... that is another topic for another day. Regardless of birthday, holiday or what the celebration, I am 100% on the "less is more" side of the fence.

Regarding Valentine's Day, my girls can either send a paper valentine (my two oldest usually make their own) or a candy, but not both unless they want to help pay for it. They are allowed to send cards to their classmates only - if they need more, they have to pay for them or make them on their own. They seem very happy to do this.

Call me stingy, call Tiger Mom, call me whatever you like, but I think there are so many excesses at school - and in the everyday lives of our children - that we are really losing sight of what is important and the overlooking the very basic ideas of being thoughtful and considerate of others.

Sorry, busy day.....just getting a chance to jump on......We also usually do the store bought valentines and a pencil or a piece of candy. I don't do a bag, but I do a little something.
