MCC Workshop Gets Ooey Gooey

Practical Ideas for the Child's World Conference held at MCC.

McHenry County College hosted the 22nd Annual Practical Ideas for the Child's World Conference on Saturday where Lisa Murphy demonstrated her sensory play philosophy.

Through her Ooey Gooey workshop, Murphy gave insights on how to teach children. Her many comments included "Stop interrupting engaged children," "Ask real questions," "Take the time to articulate what you expect of them," and "Be prepared. Make it easier, smoother for the child. Be the facilitator."

She talked about removing items from the room before the class even arrives that instructors don't want being used and keeping items out to engage children.

"'No' is not the tool you need all the time. Move it back in your toolbox and only use it when you really need to,"  Murphy advised.

About schools she adds, "The good schools are not where the kids know the answers. It's where kids are asking the best questions.

"If a child wants to make something then you need to get them the tools to make it." she added. She was referring to not interfering or trying to influence what the child is making.

She stressed the importance of outdoor play and suggested taking what you can outside.

After her speech, she went into demonstrations of different activities that one could do with young children. She used a lot of materials including shaving cream, food coloring and huge coffee filters.

This workshop was very insightful, high-energy and inspiring. Lisa Murphy is a wonderful speaker who presents workshops throughout the country. Her Ooey Gooey workshops deal with hands-on art and science ideas. Murphy has written four books and made dozens of teacher training DVDs. To learn more, visit www.ooeygooey.com.
