Elderly Crystal Lake Man Dies after Car Crashes near Routes 14 and 31

Richard S. Partyka, 91, of unincorporated Crystal Lake, was pronounced dead on Friday, Feb. 1, at Centegra's Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry.

An elderly Crystal Lake man died Friday after his car crashed on Route 31 in Crystal Lake.

Crystal Lake Police said Richard S. Partyka, 91, of unincorporated Crystal Lake, was driving a 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan on Route 31 at about 11 a.m. Feb. 1.

Partyka was traveling northbound in the curb lane when his van slowed and drifted toward the shoulder of the roadway, according to witnesses. His car struck the guardrail on the east side of the road and continued north a short distance before coming to rest along the shoulder, Crystal Lake Police Cmmdr. Dan Dziewor said.

A passing motorist witnessed the incident and notified emergency responders.

The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue and police arrived at the scene at about 11:12 a.m., and found the Caravan along the shoulder of the road. Inside, Partyka was unconscious and unresponsive, Dziewor said.

He was the only occupant in the car.

Rescue workers removed Partyka and attempted to revive him as they transported him to Centegra’s Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry. Despite those efforts, Partyka did not survive and was pronounced dead at NIMC, Dziewor said.

"The death of Mr. Partyka is inconsistent with the manner and severity of the crash and this matter remains under investigation by members of the Crystal Lake Police Department and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office," Dziewor said.

Rich, was an outstanding and sharp individual for his age. Age alone should never limit a person's ability to get behind the wheel

Nancy-
You didn't even know my grandfather, he was a remarkable man. How dare you question his driving ability when he was better than over half of the people that are on the roads now.

Investigating? sounds like the poor man died while driving, And luckily the car went to the right and came to rest avoiding any more fatalities. I hope the Police can figure it out!

I'm sorry, but those of you that feel the need to comment on my grandpa's passing in such ways need people as great as him in your life. Maybe you could learn a bit about decency. Your posts seem like a pathetic attempt to stay current in the blog world... Next time be original, start your own blog.

He was truly one of the most amazing men I have ever had the honor to know. His age had nothing to do with his driving, nor did his drivng have anything to do with his passing. If you do not know him, or the whole story, it is best to keep your opinions to yourself. It is inappropriate to judge anyone, especially when you don't even know them. The world would be a much better place if there were more men like him in it. He was an inspiration to me and my family and will be dearly missed.
