Duke’s to Turn Off the Lights for Earth Hour

International event sends a message on climate change.

Duke’s Alehouse and Kitchen in Crystal Lake will serve half-priced appetizers and eco-friendly cocktails by candlelight, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., Saturday.

The candlelight event is in support of Earth Hour, the largest environmental event in history, according to the World Wildlife Federation’s (WWF) Earth Hour website.

Earth Hour was started by WWF in 2007, in Sydney Australia. At the first event, 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights out for one hour to take a stand against climate change.

More than 5200 cities and towns in 135 countries participated in Earth Hour 2011. During Earth Hour 2012, supporters will turn off their lights between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m., Saturday, March 31, in their time zone.

The symbolic event is meant to inspire individuals to go beyond the one hour and make a commitment to the planet, according to the Earth Hour website.
