Driver Cited After Hitting Middle School Student
A Hannah Beardsley student was airlifted to Lutheran General after being hit by a van.
A 12-year-old middle school student was hit by a van while she walked to school Wednesday morning.
Emergency crews from the Crystal Lake Fire Rescue and Police Departments were called to the intersection of Crystal Lake Avenue at Oak Hollow Road shortly before 7 a.m. Wednesday. Upon arrival crews determined a cargo van towing a trailer, travelling east on Crystal Lake Avenue, had collided with a 12-year-old student of the nearby Hannah Beardsley Middle School.
According to the Crystal Lake Police Department, the student was taken to Centegra - Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry where she was immediately transferred by Flight for Life helicopter to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
The extent of the child’s injuries are unknown at this time, however due to the nature of the incident a level one trauma center was determined appropriate, according to police.
The student was on her way to band practice held at Hannah Beardsley, which was to start at 7:30 a.m.
The driver of the vehicle, 50-year-old Giles Simonson of McHenry, was cited on the scene for failure to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
According to police, witnesses are still being interviewed and the accident is still under investigation.

The student is now listed in stable condition in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Lutheran General Hospital where she remains under observation.
