Crystal Lake South Graduate Killed by Hit-and-Run Driver in Urbana

Anthony Pauls, 22, of Lake in the Hills, was a senior at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and died Saturday after he was hit by a car Friday night.

A Lake in the Hills man died early Saturday, Oct. 13, after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver at about 11:50 p.m. Friday at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Anthony Pauls, 22, a graduate from Crystal Lake South High School, was pronounced dead at 7:54 a.m. at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, police said.

Pauls was walking in the 200 block of W. University Avenue near the Lake Street intersection when a vehicle struck him, causing severe injuries.

The car fled the scene, but a Urbana Police Department sergeant located a vehicle with heavy damage nearby, according to a press release issued by Urbana Police Sgt. Andy Hawkin.

Police arrested Albert Fleming, 20, of Champaign, and leveled preliminary charges of one count of driving under the influence of alcohol, one count of leaving the scene of an accident involving injury or death and other traffic charges against him, Hawkin said in the press release.

Pauls played football and baseball all four years at Crystal Lake South, according to the Northwest Herald. He also was a member of the National Honor Society and went to University of Illinois to study engineering, the Northwest Herald article stated.

This amazing young man--my cousin Anthony--had everything going for him. His death is something you can't justify because there's no sense to it. Unfortunately, another young man brought about Anthony's death by his selfishness, by his thoughtlessness and lack of humanity. What has happened to our humanity? Unfortunately, the tragedy opens an old wound for my family as another thoughtless young man took my own brother's life while he was crossing the street to get an ice cream cone. My brother was nearly 7 and had hardly started his life. I have very little pity for these two young men who took two of our family members from us. We must help Anthony's family get through this tragedy. Nothing will ever be the same for them.
