Colonial Cafe Moves East on Northwest Hwy.

New site allows restaurant to totally remodel without closing down.

After 25 years at Crystal Point, will move a block away to a totally remodeled site in mid-May.

The popular family restaurant and ice cream shop is currently leasing the building from Inland Real Estate Corporation. The Anderson family, which owns the restaurant chain, is purchasing the former Baker’s Square site, which has sat vacant for four years.

“Our mortgage will be less than our current rent,” said Richard Lampp, general manager of Colonial Café in Crystal Lake.

Lampp said the better price for owning the building, as opposed to renting, and the ability to remodel are the main reasons for the move.

The new location is larger as well. Lampp said the kitchen is about double the size of the current facility and the dining area can fit an additional nine to 12 tables.

“After 25 years, it is very tired,” said Lampp. “We will have a whole new updated look.”

A total remodel isn’t possible at the current location, Lampp said. “We close at 10 p.m. and we’re back open at 6 a.m. We’re not closed long enough to do major remodeling.”

Lampp does not expect the restaurant to be closed for more than a few days. He said the company recently made a similar move in St. Charles and was able to close on Sunday at the old site and reopen on Thursday at the new site.

Colonial Café is currently at Crystal Point Center, 6000 Northwest Highway. The new location is 5689 Northwest Hwy.
