Tuesday, Sept. 11 marks the 11th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on our country. Several events are happening in the region to commemorate the day. See the list below for memorials near you. 

Algonquin:

A memorial recognizing two area firefighters killed in the line of duty will officially be unveiled on Sept. 11. 

The 9/11 firefighters memorial, which will be located at Riverfront Park, 501 Harrison St. in Algonquin, is also meant to recognize all of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2011. The dedication ceremony will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday and is open to the public.

Barrington:

Several Barrington-area churches will ring their bells for one minute from 8:46 a.m. to 8:47 a.m.; the time the first World Trade Center tower was hit in 2001. The churches will do so in commemoration and in honor of those who lost their lives.

Grayslake:

CLC and the American Red Cross are being joined by Muslim for Life Organization in sponsoring our September American Red Cross Blood Drive to collect blood in honor of 9/11 victims tomorrow. Their goal is to collect 10,000 units nationwide to save 30,000 lives. Remember that every time you donate, you help save 3 lives! Please try to take time out of your busy schedules to donate. American Red Cross will be on campus  from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. in Anderson Court.

Donors must be 17 years of age or older and be in good health. Be sure to eat a healthy meal and drink fluids before donating and bring picture I.D. with you. After completing a short questionnaire, you will be given a mini physical before donating. Walk-ins are welcome!

Huntley:

Bells will toll at 7:46 a.m., 8:03 a.m., 8:37 a.m. and 9:03 a.m. signifying the moment planes crashed into the World Trade Center towers in New York, the Pentagon in Washington D.C. and a field in Pennsylvania.

A ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. that evening featuring a Memory Walk Luminaria, which is new this year. The Prairie Voices will perform. The public can purchase luminaries on Sept. 9 and 11 at the Sun City Pavilion.
