Douglas Automotive owner, Doug McAllister, was surprised recently when reviewing a report from the National Safety Council.

So much so that he decided to take action.

Rather than focus primarily on safe driving for teens, the local auto maintenance professional is distributing Family Safe Driving contracts to all his clients and the general public.

To date, there have been over 812,513 crashes involving drivers using cell phones and texting.  And the number continues to grow.

“This number continued to climb
as I reviewed nsc.org site," McAllister said. "We tend to focus more on children and young adults when talking about driving safety, but I felt it was important to take it one step further."

Although the total number of police-reported traffic crashes declined from 2009 to 2010, the number of injury crashes increased 16 percent from 2009 to 2010. More than half -51% - of those killed in 2010 were unrestrained.

Additionally, fatalities of people 55 and older increased by 409, whereas fatalities of people under 55 decreased by 1,391. 

“Why shouldn’t we hold everyone in a family accountable for safe driving?” states McAllister. “These numbers are crazy! It’s time that families as a whole commit to safety.”

The Family Safe Driving Agreement commits the individual to avoid distracted and impaired and also promises to maintain safe auto practices.

Contracts are available free of charge to the public and are available at both Douglas Automotive locations in Crystal Lake and Barrington as well as the Crystal Lake, Barrington and Cary Chambers of Commerce.
